The Tesla UMCs

As of May 2019, Tesla has been shipping cars with a new Generation 2 UMC (Universal Mobile Connector).

The older Gen1 UMCs have a captive pigtail lead coming out of them, going to a proprietary connector.

The newer Gen2 UMCs do not have a captive pigtail lead. Instead, the proprietary connector is part of the actual UMC unit. This can be purchased from Tesla today, here.

There is also a new Gen3 UMC available as a spare part and it natively supports 16A three-phase power and comes with the red commando fitted (no adaptor required). This faster UMC can be purchased here. Although if you want even faster portable charging with your if you have a Model S or X supporting 16.5kW or 22kW, then our portable 3-phase EVSE will probably be of interest.

The proprietary connectors differ between Gen1 and Gen2 UMCs are are not interchangeable.

Xavelec provides adaptors for all types of UMC as well as a Compact connector system that can be used with either UMC with the corresponding adaptor.

The table below lists the specifications and highlights the key differences between Gen1, Gen2 and Gen3 UMCs.

The charging speeds mentioned are approximate values and will vary between S, 3, X and Y driving conditions, but offer a reference point.

Our three ranges to cater for all UMC types

We offer three ranges of adaptors and extension leads for use with the UMCs.

Standard Red / Gen1 & Gen3 UMCs

For use with the older Gen1 and new Gen3 UMCs, these adaptors come with the 16A red commando socket (IEC 60309) allowing you to interface with the Tesla 16A red three-phase UMC adaptor, details of which can be found here. Please be aware that this Gen1 Tesla UMC adaptor is not normally provided as part of the kit with the vehicle and has to be purchased separately from Tesla. The 32A blue UMC adaptor supplied with the kit is not used in any of our solutions.

The Gen1 UMC is better in that it supports three-phase charging allowing up to 11kW power (providing suitable power source is available). This will offer the highest charging speed possible on Model S, X and 3. The Gen3 UMC is just as good s the Gen1 because it also supports up to 11kW three-phase power. It doesn’t require any Tesla adaptor as it has the 16A red Commando plug fitted, saving the expense of buying an adaptor from Tesla. It doesn’t howerver support 32A single-phase power which the old, discontinued Gen1 UMC does.

Standard Blue / Gen2 UMC

If you have a post-May 2019 S or X or a Model 3 or Model Y, the Gen2 UMC uses the 16A blue commando as an interface. Until late 2019, the 16A blue UMC adaptor was supplied as part of the UMC pack, however newer 2020 deliveries do NOT have this adaptor provided, in which case it must be purchased from Tesla directly. The 16A Blue commando adaptor has part number 1104947-00-A.

Tesla can optionally provide a 32A Blue commando adaptor (part number 1104948-00-B). Our modular adaptor system doesn’t interface to this, but we can provide 32A Blue commando extension leads if required. 32A single phase / 7kW is the fastest charging speed supported by the Gen2 UMC as it does not unfortunately support three-phase.

Compact System

The blue and particularly red commando sockets take up some space and whilst they are IP44 rated, they are only splashproof and not fully waterproof. They can also be quite clunky to operate if you have small hands.

Xavelec has developed a “Compact” connector which still offers full 11kW three-phase capabilities whilst being a lot smaller and fully waterproof so has no issues being left submerged in water.

The Compact system is now available in two levels – one supporting the full three-phase power, called Compact Red (to match with the Red Commando plugs) and a lighter, cheaper single-phase-only version. The latter is fully compatible with all Compact adaptors, including three-phase ones, but will only carry single phase power.
